Sural Intraneural Ganglion Cysts Are Joint-related

چکیده
In the field of plastic surgery, many new ideas and skills are developed by surgeons and researchers. “Publish or perish” is a phrase coined to describe the pressure in academia to publish work constantly to further or sustain one’s career [1]. To share knowledge or skill with others, or promote one’s position in schools, they should write papers. However, it is not easy to gather and develop writing material. I learned an invaluable lesson at the International Confederation of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery meeting which was held in Yokohama, Japan in 1995. At the opening ceremony, Dr. Joseph Murray who performed the first successful human kidney transplant on identical twins and who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine had the keynote lecture. The elder retired plastic surgeon emphasized that scientists should remember 3 important words: curiosity, imagination, and persistence. Curiosity is an emotion related to natural inquisitive behavior such as exploration, investigation, and learning. We can have curiosity in any basic research or about surgical procedures. Imagination is the ability to form mental images, sensations and concepts, in a moment when they are not perceived through sight, hearing, or the other senses. Lastly, persistence is the determination to do something even though it is difficult or other people oppose it. Reading a book about swimming cannot guarantee the ability to swim. Likewise, there is no royal road to writing papers. However, it would be helpful to the surgeon to remember Dr. Murray’s 3 words: curiosity, imagination, and persistence.

A posttraumatic, joint-connected sural intraneural ganglion cyst-with a new mechanism of intraneural recurrence: a case report.
UNLABELLED Intraneural ganglion cysts are rare in occurrence and most commonly involve the peroneal nerve at the fibular neck. We present a case of a traumatically induced intraneural ganglion cyst of the sural nerve that developed after a nondisplaced posterior malleolus ankle fracture. The intraneural ganglion cyst was connected to the subtalar joint by its articular branch and ascended sever...
متن کاملCommon Peroneal Nerve Palsy Secondary to a Proximal Tibiofibular Joint “Ganglion Cyst”—A Case Report and Review of Literature
Although ganglion cysts occur frequently, their presence in the lower extremities is rare and they seldom cause peripheral nerve compression. There are enumerable case reports of intraneural ganglion involvement with the common peroneal nerve and its branches, the sural nerve, and the posterior tibial nerve but extraneural ganglion sciatic and common peroneal nerve palsy cases are quite rare. O...
متن کاملEvaluation of Intraneural Ganglion Cysts Using 3D FSE-Cube
Purpose: It is often difficult to definitively diagnose intraneural ganglion cysts with conventional MR imaging and to identify the origin of the cyst in a joint via what may often be a subtle connection [1]. Identification of the joint connection has important clinical implications if it is not addressed surgically, such as: cyst recurrence, incomplete patient recovery, and suboptimal operativ...
متن کاملMagnetic resonance imaging of a deep peroneal intraneural ganglion cyst originating from the second metatarsophalangeal joint: a pattern of propagation supporting the unified articular (synovial) theory for the formation of intraneural ganglia.
UNLABELLED A deep peroneal intraneural cyst of the first web space of the foot is presented. Analysis of the magnetic resonance image scans revealed not only a connection with the medial aspect of the second metatarsophalangeal joint, but also the presence of an interconnected cyst within the lateral digital branch of the hallux. These characteristic magnetic resonance image findings are consis...
متن کاملPure peroneal intraneural ganglion cyst ascending along the sciatic nerve.
Peroneal nerve entrapment is most commonly seen in the popliteal fossa. It is rarely caused by a ganglion. Intraneural ganglia, although uncommon and seldom cause serious complications, are well recognized and most commonly affect the common peroneal (lateral popliteal) nerve. Ganglionic cysts developing in the sheath of a peripheral nerve or joint capsule may cause compression neuropathy. The ...
